Last night, Makerere University was faced with the worst nightmare after a tree fell on a taxi that was carrying about 14 passengers near the main gate opposite Tuskys supermarket.
The taxi was moving towards Sir Apollo Kagwa Road when a tree suddenly fell terribly damaging the taxi. The incident claimed two lives on spot of passersby and passengers….The several injured casualties were rushed to Mulago hospital but are in terrible conditions.
Eye witnesses claim that on realizing that the tree was about to fall amidst hysterical screams, the driver tried to reverse only to find a small Rav 4 behind making it hard for him to neither move forward nor backwards. He was entangled in the middle making the taxi vulnerable to the falling tree.
For a while now, trees have been falling around Makerere University and this has been attributed to strong winds during the heavy rains. Just a few weeks back, a tree fell just opposite Mary Stuart hall causing a slag in traffic but luckily didn’t injure anyone.
It is not clear how many students were on board and more patients are being treated at Mulago Hospital. The two deceased have not had their identities confirmed yet.
