A section of Makerere university students, including the Guild Representative Councillors (GRCs) are calling for investigations into the fire oubreak at Makerere University.
The entire university body was thrown into panic and utter shock Saturday night when fire gutted the iconic Makerere Main building.
The concerned students in different class WhatsApp groups are calling for a “wee wee” strike to compel the university administration to institute an investigation into the matter.
“We student leaders need to do something. We should either call for a press conference or mobilize our fellow Makerereans to strike. This fire outbreak is fishy. The university Police deploys three police officers every day and night to guard the iconic Ivory Tower. This is on top of a private guard who sits at the entrance everyday. We clearly need answers on where the security of the Ivory Tower was that time the building caught fire,” the former Makerere security guild minister fumed.
Besides the office Prof Nawangwe and other administrative offices, the building holds student records. The basement is full of archive files spanning the whole history of the institution.
“A lot of property has been destroyed. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the fire,” a police statement reads.
A Makerere university student queried: “How come teargas trucks arrive in no time during strikes at the Ivory Tower but the fire brigade took hours to arrive?” He added: “We don’t care about COVID we need to storm the university to demand for answers.”
We shall keep you posted on the next course of action from the students body.
