Makerere University Council, the highest decision making organ of Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning have selected for the first time, a female as Chairperson.
After the expiry of the two term tenure of her predecessor Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem, Mrs. Lorna Magara has been instituted as the new university council chairperson.
In an election that was characterized by drama and heavy police deployment, Mrs. Magara polled 11 votes out of 17 to beat former Internal Affairs Ministry Permanent Secretary, Steven Kagoda.
A wife, entrepreneur, educationist and philanthropist, Mrs. Magara joins the university with vast experience in management and administration that she has garnered over a period of over 30 years. Her tenure of office will run from 20th December, 2018 to 19th December, 2022 where she’ll still be eligible for another term once re-elected.
She holds a Bachelors degree of Arts with Education from Makerere University and a Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership and Management from Mukono based Uganda Christian University (UCU).
Mrs. Magara is a certified ACE administrator, ACE supervisor and like her husband, Mr. James Magara, leadership coach.
She is the founder and Principal of Vine International Christian Academy, a school that in her own terms “has provided a holistic value based education” since 2005. She is also the director of Jubilee Dental Ltd, a Company that currently operates three dental clinics in Uganda and one in Kigali, Rwanda.
She is married to author and Dental Surgeon Dr. James Magara and together they have four children. Dr. Magara is the founder of Jubilee Dental Clinics.
In the University Council, she will be deputized by former East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Speaker Dan Kidega.
