Makerere Guild President Churchill Ssentamu: I was dumped for being broke

Makerere University Guild President Churchill Ssentamu, son of National Unity Platform (NUP) politician Chairman Nyanzi and nephew to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), has opened up about a heartbreak that once shook his confidence.

Speaking candidly, the young leader revealed that his former girlfriend walked away during one of the toughest financial periods of his life — accusing him of being “less ambitious.”

“She said I wasn’t poor, I was just working,” Churchill recalled. “I didn’t have as much money to take care of her, so she thought I didn’t have ambitions, that I didn’t have a future ahead of me.”

At the time, Churchill admits, he was still struggling to find his footing. Today, he stands tall as Makerere’s Guild President, a position that has cemented his place as one of the most promising young leaders in Uganda’s student politics.

Despite the painful split, Churchill insists he bears no grudge. Instead, he expressed hope that his ex-girlfriend would have been more patient.

“I wish she understood and gave me time,” he said softly. “But I have nothing against her. I truly wish her the best.”

For many of his supporters, Churchill’s story resonates beyond personal heartbreak. It’s a tale of resilience, ambition, and the determination to rise — even when the world seems to doubt you.
