Monday 9th December 2019 saw the Makerere guild leadership under the MakConnet Initiative and in conjunction with the College Of Health Sciences (CHS) camp in the south western part of the country that is Kisoro District to extend student oriented free health care services in a seemingly troubled district of Kisoro in as far as health is concerned. The health camp was later on in the same week extended to Mitooma District in Biteleko sub county where the same services were rendered.
Lots of services like community health visits, lab services, radiology services, sickle cell screening, eye care (giving glasses), speech and language therapy, Maternal services, Nutritional assessment, sensitization and empowerment of VHT’s ( village health teams) and in general empowering a people to value health and challenging societal leaders to invest in health.
The camp was pivoted on two health center at the level of health center III that is Muramba Health Centre III in Bufumbira south constituency and Nyabihuniko health center III in Bufumbira East Constituency. This is how Makerere is building a healthy nation.
The MakConnect Initiative by the Makerere 85th students Guild under the leadership of Julius Kateregga has challenged itself with the task of taking the goodness and greatness of Makerere down to communities. This has seen the guild president travel with the student fraternity to Kisoro District and the impact of this three day outreach is one Makerere University ought to pride in.
It is also key to interest oneself with the fact that the MakConnect/MakCHS did not stopping in Kisoro. On the 12th of December 2019, the initiative was extended to Mitooma District where free health services were provided to the people of Mitooma district. The students Guild has confirmed that more and more energies have and will still be harnessed to create a Makerere University that directly impacts communities for they believe that that’s what an ideal institution of higher learning should be.
The iniative has attracted enormous positivity from the general public and the student fraternity. Makerere University has overtime been painted with negativity, the student fraternity has similarly hungered for a leadership that fronts their cause, a leadership that bridges the gap between the communities and the innovation, intellect and greatness that lie deep within Makerere University.
Kisoro has been impacted, its health standards are not the same any more. Mitooma has felt the impact and the face of its health sector will be nourished and revamped. The initiative is on the move and in a few, Uganda in its entirety will be impacted.
