Makerere Guild President Reacts to University Decision to Ban Social Events, Blames Police for Freshers’ Ball Chaos

Makerere University’s 87th guild president Shamim Nambassa has pelted the blame onto Uganda police for being the cause of the chaotic scenes at the freshers’ ball.

In her response to the Dean of students’ letter dated 21st March, 2022 announcing the suspension, Nambassa alleges that the chaotic scenes witnessed on Friday 18th March, 2022 were a result of police’s ‘unnecessary retaliation’, adding that the Dean should reconsider her decision to suspend the social events at Makerere.

“The havoc on the night of 18th March, 2022 on the freshers’ ball was caused due to the unnecessary retaliation by police firing ammunition, teargas and unselectively battering students. It is so regrettable that the police responsible for protecting our lives and property was instead the cause of all injuries and havoc,” part of her response to the Dean reads.

Makerere’s Dean of students had earlier suspended the freshers’ ball, bazaar and porridge nights due to the chaotic nature of students during such events.

“Management resolved that the freshers’ ball, porridge nights and bazaars are suspended indefinitely and these activities shall no longer be permitted at the University until further notice,” the Dean wrote in her letter dated 21st March, 2022.

While Nambassa accuses police for being the cause of the freshers’ ball havoc, she doesn’t state as to why police had to react this way.

However, the Bee has come to learn that the chaos at the freshers’ ball was a result of hall superiority complex and this is part and parcel of Makerere’s hall culture. It’s not yet clear when the suspension of the social events will end.
