The decision has brought about mixed reactions from the public with critics describing the move as an unfair one since many bread-winners will lose their only source of income to support themselves and those around them.
Among the critics is the outgoing Guild President Shamim Nambassa who did not restrain her dismay with this public utterance;
“Unfortunately, every day the government with its agents tries to make Uganda inhabitable. Makerere has decided to chase out over 300 businesses in the university including canteens, photo copiers and printeries, without a justifiable reason or alternative.”
Shamim’s time as an influencer at the hill is almost up with polls around the corner, leaving one to wonder if there’s much she can do to topple the decree.
To her consolation however, she is not alone in the fight for a more free Makerere since there is support from notable leaders like Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura who too, condemned the university’s decision.
“As the military arrests & chases vendors off Kampala streets with no alternative. Makerere has decided to render 400 people unemployed. Please note that in Kampala, Govt has only 16 markets, the rest are expensive private markets. Uganda olemwa indeed!” Nyanjura commented.
Makerere University is yet to respond to the outcries as evictions and closure of stalls proceeds.
