A prophet has honor except in his home. Makerere guild president Roy Ssemboga will always live to testify this after he survived punches from angry students who were striking yesterday.
The fourth- year medicine student was saved by a few students who pleaded with his tormentors. The visibly annoyed students, whom we are yet to identify, argued that Ssemboga was reluctant to solve the issue of lecturers refusing to teach evening and weekend students.
Another student argued that Ssemboga should find means of getting a university bus to transport enough students to Kyambogo on weekend for a football match, or he faces the worst.
“kyambogo students have over under looked us. Thy say we are always striking. I want you to get us means of transport and we go there and show them fire. Promise me that you will,” the student demanded.
However, this student was shortly after attacked by his fellows for deviating from the main cause of the strike which was demanding for lecturers to get back to evening and weekend classes.
“We are here for an academic reason now you are bringing your Kyambogo and football stuff,” retorted one of the student who carried a tree branch.
The strike later quelled mainly because some evening students didn’t turn up. In a meeting between the university council and Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa), it was agreed upon that lecturers return to class as their issue of incentives amounting to Shs 46bn gets sorted.
