Makerere University guild president Roy Ssembogga has warned students against smoking shisha, saying the habit results into serious health problems.
Speaking before the breast cancer awareness run that was organised by the 82nd guild government, the fifth-year Medicine and Surgery student explained that sisha is among the causes of breast and lung cancer.
“According to the Uganda cancer institute, in every 100,000 women, 45 have breast cancer and the World Bank released a report indicating that the burden is going to increase on 3rd world countries without a strategic cancer plan like Uganda and that’s why we decided to focus on It,” said Ssembogga.
The breast cancer awareness run was the curtain raiser for the Health Week in which free breast cancer screening will be done across all halls of residence in Makerere.
Ssembogga added: “On November 4, an intelligent and talented ambassador for Face of MUK will be crowned and she will take on a country wide tour in different regions and schools. During this tour, a target population of 9-10 million girls and women will be screened and taught Breast cancer self examination skills. The Victims will be empowered and those in early breast cancer stages will receive medical attention.
The event was also attended by hundreds of Makerere University students, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine and his wife, the head of security in Makerere, Jackson Mucunguzi among other celebrities.
Bobi Wine agreed with Ssemboga, but added that female students allover the country should take breast cancer as a serious epidermic and should embrace the advice of self examination.
According to some female students who smoke shisha, the drug is believed to be useful in reducing fats hence helping them maintain their much-adored campus figures.
