The no nonsense KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi has threatened to shut down Makerere University’s halls of residence due to poor sanitation. The university halls accommodate government sponsored students and a few privately sponsored students at a small fee.
The halls include: Mitchell, Livingstone, Nsibirwa, Nkrumah, Lumumba, Africa, Complex, Dag, Kabanyoro, and Mary Stuart.
“KCCA Health inspectors reliably inform that they found most of the Makerere University halls of residence in bad sanitation conditions, with risk of exposure of the student population to disease,” she said. “I’m worried this may warrant their closure unless the mess is sorted out.”
Speaking at the site of road excavation works close to Makerere college school on 8th June, Musisi was concerned by the questionable sanitation standards the situation around Mary Stuart girl’s hall.
Musisi’s concerns come after KCCA offered to relocate Makerere College School’s 750 students to Mary Stuart hall in the university, till the road works and subsequent repairs at the school are completed.
Makerere University Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, responded to the comments conceding the shared health concerns.
He however added that the University was considering constructing external toilets to accommodate the growing population in the halls of residence.
“There’s a policy in the pipeline to construct public toilets in all halls,” Nawangwe explained.
Lwamaza Kent, the Livingstone hall health minister, agrees that there are a few health concerns related to blockage of the drainage system and poor disposal of condoms.
