Makerere University, one of the oldest institutions in the country is comprised of about twelve halls of residences including six for males, three for females which are situated at the main campus plus other three outside the university.
Each of these halls of residences has a signage that consists of the name of the hall, the motto or catch word, postal address, a badge or an animal that acts as a symbolic element, the university logo among other things.
These have for a long time been covered by dust, rust, dirt and to some, the words were getting off so they couldn’t be read easily, which one would attribute to how long these sign posts and buildings have been in existence.
However, these have since gotten a new look as of the new year 2020 and one can easily read the signposts. These have been painted and it’s no doubt that they shine brightly now.
Taken from the official Facebook page of Makerere University where the post read ” Let us settle this now, you need more likes, shares and comments on your hall” it’s evident from the comments that, this is a positive start and a green light to more renovations and many people suggest that they should now renovate the halls of residence since the signages are cleared.
It should be remembered that, the halls of residences once caused an alarm last year as their toilets, bathrooms were and are still in a dilapidated state which puts the students’ health at risk. These halls of residence are Mary Stuart hall, Complex hall, Africa hall, Lumumba hall, Nsibirwa hall, Nkrumah hall, Livingstone hall, University hall, Galloway hall, Dag Hammaskjold hall which houses post graduate students, Mulago hospital complex which accommodates medicine students and Makerere University Agricultural Research institute, Kabanyolo which accommodates third year students pursuing a bachelors degree in Agriculture.
The rest of the students reside outside the university in private hostels and others commute from home. Some of these hostels are affiliated to the university that is, the owners and the university management came to an agreement to accommodate university students.
All the halls and hostels house a population of about 5000 undergraduate students and over 100 graduate students with only 16% registered to the university. These also house both government and private students.
