Following a number of strikes at Makerere University, the parliament of Uganda directed its Education Committee to go and find out on what could be the root causes of those rampant strikes apart from tuition increment.
On Wednesday 11th December 2019, Members of Parliament on the Education Committee presented their findings on Makerere University before the parliament where they endorsed the 15% tuition increamement policy of Makerere University .
They also came up with other findings and these included quality of service delivered at the university, the sanitation of halls of residence and others.
The Committee which interacted with the students, Makerere University administrators, among others, after the violent protests, found out that the state of the infrastructure at Makerere University is appalling and requires massive investment by the government.
According to the report, MPs established that rooms in some halls of residence are being rented out and occupied by former students who finished their studies like 1 year ago and other unauthorized persons, which compromises security at the institution.
Regarding suspended students, the committee recommended that the university management remains with its decision on all the affected students.
