Makerere university has issued a notice of clarification over concerns arising from MUASA meeting held on Thursday 26th November in the Makerere main hall. The issuance was in response to the whispers around university in the student circles about an impending staff strike. The concerns inter alia are linked to unpaid arrears; salary and incentives.
With regard to arrears, the university reiterated that staff arrears are paid in time, matter of fact that the November salaries were paid on the 24th of November.
The university however blamed the four months delay in paying allowances and any such incentives to the violent October student protest against the sixth week tuition policy. The notice blamed the delay on scarcity of funds. Needless to say they insisted they were working round the clock to pay up two months of the four months from july to October.
The vice chancellor added his voice by banking his financial hopes on students’ tution; a projected 12 billion worth of collection. He said that permits wouldn’t be extended towards students without zero tuition balance. This is meant to bolster the university coffers and effect payment of staff arrears(both teaching and support staff.)
