Makerere University has suspended one student from the school of law over sexual harassment, the Makerere Law Society has revealed.
Annie Maria Adikin, president Makerere Law Society, in a letter to the Mak law fraternity, said that at least one of their students had been suspended for sexually assualting another student.
She said the law society is committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and creating a safe and inclusive academic environment for all members.
“We are united in our commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct and creating a safe and inclusive academic environment for all members of our community. We are deeply disturbed by the wave of sexual harassment and violence that has gone unreported at the Makerere University School of Law,” writes Adikin.
She also says the Makerere Law Society will maintain its stance of zero tolerance against sexual harassment and violence against women and men in any form.
“As the Makerere Law Society, we firmly maintain our stance of zero tolerance against sexual harassment and violence against women and men in any form, as it is a gross violation of our shared values and a betrayal of our duty to create an academic space where everyone feels respected, valued, and safe,” she added.
The Bee has learned that investigations into allegations of sexual harassment are still ongoing at the school of law and quite many male students are being accused of taking part in the vice.
According to the Makerere University Policy and Regulations Against Sexual Harassment (2006) (as amended in 2018), anyone accused of sexual harassment shall be subjected to the disciplinary committee and if found guilty of sexual harassment shall, depending on the
