Following the resolution by the College Board at the School of Law in Makerere University which suspended evening lectures temporarily until their salary demands are met by the university management, students of Law on the Day Programme (under their umbrella association the Makerere Law Society – MLS) have vowed to boycott lectures until the suspension is lifted and the classes resume.
In the written communication, the MLS President Kansiime Mukama Taremwa called upon the Day Class students not to show up for class starting Monday, 29th January until the evening lectures resume.
This according to him, is the best way to alert the university management that there is a crisis at the School of Law which needs immediate intervention.
“We are confronted by a situation that will need our utmost cooperation and urgent attention,” Taremwa said in the letter.
The MLS President, who initially held a meeting with all Class Representatives before coming up with the resolution to boycott, appreciated the struggle by lecturers to demand their pay but insists that the evening students shouldnt be subjected to such treatment because of management issues.
“Recognizing that this is a situation that affects all students, because injustice somewhere is injustice every where, we resolved that all programmes should not turn up for classes starting Monday 29th January 2018. The (student) leadership shall continue to engage the university management on the issue till close of business on Monday,” the declaration for boycott read.
The students’ leader also made mention of a move by a section of students on the Evening Programme who intend to sue the university for breach of contract and pledged “unequivocal” support in their persuit for justice.
On 23rd January, 2018 the Principal of the School of Law, Prof. Christopher Mbazira suspended all evening classes for all undergraduates and Masters students at the School until their demands as regards facilitation for the extra hours are met.
