Dr. Barirega Akankwasa, lecturer of forestry at Makerere University has been elected Vice President of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species of Wildlife (CMS).
He is the resident tutor at Nkrumah Hall, one of the resident halls in MUK. Before being elected into the vice president’s seat he was the Acting Commissioner for Wildlife Conservation in Uganda’s Ministry of Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities. He was elected during the 13th meeting of the conference of the parties to the convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals in Gandhi agar, India.
CMS is an international agreement signed under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme that aims to conserve migratory species within their migratory ranges. It is concerned with conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale.
The convention aims at protecting migratory animals that are endangered and making people more aware of their role in protecting the environment as each generation holds the future of the next generation in their hands.
