Makerere Lecturer, feminist and activist Dr. Stella Nyanzi is set to be released from jail on Thursday 20th Feb 2020.
Doctor Stella has been serving her 18 months sentence after she was incriminated by Buganda Road Court magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu on 2nd August 2019 for a case of cyber harassment against President Museveni that she committed on 16th September 2018.
Her 18 months sentence however meant that she would have to serve 9 months since she had already served the 9 months while on remand.
On 16th September 2018, Dr. Nyanzi published a churlish birthday poem to President Museveni a day after his 74th birthday, deriding his mother Esteeri Kokundeka.
She was later arrested in November 2018 and taken on remand in Luzira prison where she served 9 months before she appeared in court under live video conferencing from Luzira prison.
Dr Nyanzi is set to face court on Thursday 20th Feb as her sentence ends. Her supporters have already taken to social media preparing to welcome her with immense love.
Dr Nyanzi is a research fellow at Makerere University Institute for Social Research. She is a philanthropist, activist, and a writer. She wrote a book while in prison, No roses from my mouth, which got published recently showing her experience in Luzira prison.
