Makerere University lecturers have today declared a strike over accumulated unpaid incentive arrears for the past eight months.
During a general assembly held under their umbrella body, Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), the lecturers recounted that despite their pleas to have this money wired to their accounts, the administration has not taken any action, a reason they have decided to strike.
“After a lengthy discussion, the General Assembly unanimously resolved to lay down their tool effective midnight until all incentive arrears are paid,” reads part of the letter that is signed by MUASA chairman Muhammad Kiggundu and addressed to the university council’s chairman, Dr Charles Wana-Etyem.
According to the lecturers, they last received this money in February this year, and have since been demanding for payment for the other months in vain.
The lecturers’ strike is now the second at Makerere University with the first being that of Mitchell and Univeristy Hall students who today boycotted lunch that is provided by Venus Meals enterprise. The campus now seems a hot bed for a massive strike that may land the institution into trouble, once again.
