The Medical School of Makerere University has been ranked in the second position among the best medical schools in Africa after University of Cape Town, South Africa. The Medical school encompasses about eleven programs that are undertaken by students who desire to serve in different fields. The programs include Medicine & Surgery, Pharmacy, Public Health and Dental Surgery among others.
The news was released to the general public on 12th September, 2019 by the University’s Vice Chancellor in a tweet where he proceeded to announce that Makerere’s medical school still holds a spot among the top 250 medical schools globally according to the 2020 Rankings.
This announcement came after a few weeks when the University opened a dental hospital and school at the Main Campus in response to a report signed by the Chairperson of the East African Community Medical and Dental Practitioners Council calling for the closing of the dental school in Mulago.
The acquisition of modern laboratory equipment, renovation of the dental clinic with requisition of adequate staff members must have been among the reasons as to why the university’s medical school ranking remained good.
The College of health Sciences at Makerere University has about 2500 students who are pursuing studies in undergraduate programs, master’s programs and doctorates. The Principal of the College of Health Sciences, Prof Charles Ibingira attributed the good position to the combined efforts of all the stakeholders at the College, to ensure that the health sector has a reliable source of trained personnel that will stand strong in matters that concern life of the patients.
