The much anticipated and billed Makerere Mitchellex Bazaar has been reduced to seven days, from the usual 14 days, Campus Bee has learned.
The move was pushed by the outgoing Vice Chancellor who insists that the Mitchellex Bazaar is a waste of time and students need to get to studies instead of ‘spending a lot of time aimlessly.’
The organizers of the Bazaar usually pay shs20m to take part in the exhibition for two weeks. Inside sources tell us that the fee will be reduced to shs10m for bidders interested in handling this year’s Mitchellex Bazaar.
Guild President petitions
Makerere University’s guild President, Kato Paul has written to the deputy Vice Chancellor of administration and finance, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe.
In a letter dated 17th July 2017, Kato writes to the deputy VC requesting for an extension of the Mitchellex Bazaar so as to enable continuing students a chance to buy required items in the whole academic year.
Kato also noted that continuing students are likely to miss out other benefits of the Bazaar such as social gains in case the deadline is not extended. However, he did not include the number of days likely to favor the continuing students but his statement seems to be requesting the restoration of the 10-14 days deadline.
In relation to student matters at Makerere University, Kato used his social media account to inform Makerereans that the management has finally withheld a move to pay government students cash for their food money. Apparently, there will be a thorough discussion regarding this matter before a decision is reached. It should be noted there has been various discussions at the Wandegeya based University suggesting that all government sponsored students should be paid Shs 4500 daily for food.
