Last week, Makerere University witnessed a dark moment of the 88th Guild electoral process when student from Uganda Christian University (UCU) Kampala Campus succumbed to a brawl during campaigns.
The deceased was identified as Bewatte Betungura, had come to rally behind FDC flag bearer Justus Tukamushaba when a scuffle ensued with the NUP camp as the campaigns intensified.
The regrettable incident forced the university administration to put a halt on the entire process of electing new leaders, affecting all other contenders, notably, the NRM leaning candidate – Hussein Ibra.
Hussein Ibra doubled as the representative of the Lumbox solidarity in the Guild presidential race and has thus broken the silence on the entire saga citing that,
“A couple of days ago were not any easy for us, having suffered at the hands of violence as the community of Makerere University. It is so unfortunate that in this same period a comrade lost his life as known to you all in the names of Michael Bewatte Betungura. In a sorrowful state I continue to ask the Almighty God to comfort his bereaved family and that in one or another justice is served,” Ibra noted.
Hussein cheekily commented on the struggle to restore the process so as not to put the efforts of his supporters to waste.
“It is to our absurdity that due to this unfortunate event our electoral activities were halted and our efforts put to waste but I implore you not to lose hope. My sincere gratitude goes to all of you for working devotedly towards achieving our goal as the negotiators. It is vividly evident that your love and support for us has helped us get to this point,” he added.
With the indefinite suspension of elections at Makerere University, a glimmer of hope for the participants is yet to be seen until the select committee elucidates more on the previous occurrences.
