Patience must have forgotten to sign a pay cheque in the hunt for Bewatte’s killer, and it is high time we stopped waiting, it is definite it won’t pay.
Bewatte Betungura Michael, a UCU law student was killed in a scuffle that erupted during the Makerere University guild elections on July 14.
It is now three months, to sound more serious, a quarter of the year since police embarked on the hunt for Bewatte’s killer. From the look of things, this is another forgotten case.
Many arrests have been made by police in the investigation of Bewatte’s death but all have met hoots of derision.
In the first scene of drama, police made a contradictory report about the circumstances that led to Bewatte Betungura’s death.
According to a police report about the murder, Bewatte and his camp (FDC) were being guarded by Northcote Guard Brigade while NUP supporters -with whom they clashed, were guarded by Rat Guard Brigade (RGB).
Anyway, to error is human, but police has never rectified this intellectual mess which leaves us doubting its competence.
The second dramatic scene, call it the blind intelligent officers, was too humourous that it became rather annoying.
Two individuals, Aaron Arunda and Ali Kange, disguised as undercover detectives attached to state house anti-corruption unit, hoodwinked police into making unnecessary arrests.
A number of individuals were arrested -including Frank Kabuye the MP for Kasanda South, and later released due to lack of evidence to implicate them.
Police did admit that it had been hoodwinked with false evidences. At this stage, police realized it had been outsmarted.
Since then, police has gone silent about the investigation into Bewatte Betungura’s death.
This is not the first and probably not the last time police has gone silent on investigations concerning death of students.
In June 2020, Emmanuel Tegu, a medical student at Makerere University was slain within the university premises. Two years later, the culprits have never been brought to book.
Like Tegu, Bewatte’s case is likely to join the pile of unfinished investigations.
It is high time police concedes defeats and hires an expert, perhaps a witch, or convince us otherwise.
