Police in Kampala Metropolitan North are investigating circumstances under which a one Betungura Bewatte, 27, was murdered during the guild rally at Rugby grounds on Thursday.
The deceased was a resident of Kikoni Zone B, Makerere parish, Kawempe Division in Kampala.
According to Mr. Luke Oweyesigyire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Region, three Makerere University students have so far been arrested to help on the investigations.
The trio are identified by police as Hon. Frank Kabuye, Allan Ssekidde and Muzafaru Kabuurwa detained at Kampala central police station (CPS), Wandegeya police station, and Old Kampala Police Station respectively.
According to police, the arrested individuals are suspected to have participated in the chaos that culminated into the death of Batungura with Hon. Kbuye being the ring leader.
“Efforts are underway to have other suspects traced. Meanwhile, it is also alleged that the fight was between the NUP and FDC Political factions. The NUP team led by Kabuye Frank turned violent after a disagreement, leading to the stabbing” Mr. Oweyesigyire stated
The body of the deceased was conveyed to city mortuary Mulago for Postmortem from Makerere hospital where he succumbed to the wound.
The crime scene is cordoned off as investigations are underway.
“We have cordoned off the area, statements are still being recorded and CCTV footage will be retrieved to aid in the ongoing investigations. More details will be availed as soon as they are available”
Meanwhile, Makerere University 88th guild elections were suspended with immediate effect and the university council are awaiting a meeting to see the way forward.
