The High Court yesterday through Lady Justice Lydia Mugambe ordered Makerere University to reinstate its suspended research fellow, Dr Stella Nyanzi after the institution was found in contempt of its own staff appeals tribunal.
On top of giving her back her job, Mugambe further ordered the institution to give Shs 120 million to Nyanzi as damages caused awarded to her.
Today morning, she celebrated her success through a post made from her official Facebook account, thanked whoever helped her win this and vowed to continue fighting for justice.
“I am delighted by yesterday’s ruling of Lady Justice Lydia Mugambe. I won this case for myself. My lawyer – Isaac Ssemakadde, We won for the underdogs at Makerere Institute of Social Research who are bullied by Prof Mahmood Mamdani. We won this case for the downtrodden and abused employees at Makerere University who are penalised for daring to challenge authoritarianism and abuse of power.” Stella Nyanzi added.
Stella Nyanzi went ahead to reveal the fact that the university has to pay her salary for the 8 years she spent while she wasn’t in office and she also has to be promoted to the position of Senior Research Fellow after losing out for all that time.
The university is expected to reinstate Nyanzi to her Job and pay her Shillings 120 million as soon as possible.
