Jonan Mugisha Twinamatsiko, the Makerere NRM Caucus Chairperson has said the public and students shouldn’t expect much from the FDC drive to open Makerere.
Mugisha said: “The opportunists and political strategists [in FDC] have now become professionals in the game of manipulation and exploitation. I have come to realise that the count-down is for the launch of the 2021 FDC fundraising campaign.”
According to him, different and ‘correct’ endeavours have been taken by almost all stakeholders to see that the Ivory Tower is opened even though no results have been realised. He added that Dr Kizza Besigye’s ultimatum not have any effect.
The Visitation Committee called upon President Museveni to open the institution as they continue with their work, and student leaders also met the First Lady who is also the minister of Education at State House in Nakasero previously, asking for the same.
Mugisha believes this was the right channel of work and it would have yielded results if the ultimatum had not come up from FDC.
In an FDC statement that has gone viral on socialmedia, the general public is asked to contribute money towards opening Makerere on an account in the names of Kiiza Besigye. In the same statement, RSVP is through the contacts of the FDC spokesperson and other FDC officials.
But Mugisha says, “If it were for a noble cause, then the account name would be in the names of MUASA and the said beneficiaries would be signatories.”
He further says that the politicisation of the matter by FDC will only worsen the situation.
“Much as we may hide it, in the eyes of President Museveni, Dr Besigye is a political rival. The President cannot be seen to play to threats put out by his political opponents.”
“Even if the university was supposed to re-open in these ten days, at least we can be sure it won’t be due to the issuance of the ultimatum by FDC,” he concluded.
