The police council that sits at the Uganda Police Force headquarters in Naguru has resolved to elevate Makerere Police Station to the status of police division, Campus Bee has learned. It should be recalled that Makerere police has been operating under Wandegeya police station and is has suffered issues like lack of enough policemen in comparison to the students’ population.
Our sources have further revealed that the move has been made in a bid to reinforce the station and to equip the office with enough police officials as well as other tools needed in executing their duties. The move has been made amid complaints from both students and the general public following the heavy deployment of security operatives at the university.
Among the solutions suggested by President Museveni to ensure tight security at the university, the NRM Leader promised to beef up the institution’s security, few weeks after students were brutalized by UPDF officials for demonstrating against the 15% tuition increment.
“My worry about the military police deployment at Makerere University is that they are not trained for that. The military are supposed to deal with crimes like terrorist attacks. They can back the Police but not to head the security at the University. I am going to direct the Inspector General of Police, Martin Ochola, to develop a security plan for Makerere University,” Museveni said.
While commenting about the move, Joshua Muhwezi Lawel, the Makerere University Guild Information Minister assured colleagues that they (students) will not stop demanding for their interests even if they set up a barracks within the campus premises.
“This however shall not deter us from demanding for our interests as students , even if they construct a barracks within.” Muhwezi vowed.
