Assoc. Prof. Bruce J. Kirenga has been appointed the Principal of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (CHS),
The appointment marks a new chapter in the institution’s leadership, succeeding Prof. Charles Ibingira who had served in this role since 2015.
Prof. Kirenga, renowned for his contributions to respiratory health research and leadership at the Makerere University Lung Institute, brings a wealth of experience to this role.
His career has focused on combating respiratory diseases like tuberculosis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and he has led numerous groundbreaking studies on the intersection of lung health and environmental factors such as air pollution.
Prof. Kirenga completed his internal medicine training at Makerere University and pursued advanced pulmonary medicine training at Mulago Hospital.
He also gained international experience through clinical and research training at Yale University and a clinical research fellowship from the University of Amsterdam.
Important to note is that Prof. Kirenga played a vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to related research and health initiatives.
He also serves as the Programme Team Lead for the LIGHT Consortium in Uganda, focusing on TB and lung health
