Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nawangwe has provided a detailed explanation for the delays in filling deputy vice-chancellor positions.
He attributed the prolonged vacancies entirely to legal challenges and court interventions.
For the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration) position, Prof. Nawangwe revealed that the position has remained vacant since 2020, when the high court initially nullified Prof. William Bazeyo’s appointment following allegations of an irregular selection process.
A second attempt to fill the position was again halted by court petitions from the same contestant.
A breakthrough came last year when the original contestant withdrew their case, seemingly clearing the path for a new selection process.
However, another contestant promptly filed a new court petition, once again stalling the recruitment.
Regarding the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) position, Nawangwe explained that the previous officeholder’s term ended in December 2023.
A short acting contract was issued, but the incumbent then petitioned court, citing delays in his performance appraisal. This legal action effectively froze the university’s ability to complete the appraisal or move forward with a permanent appointment.
In response to these challenges, the University Senate has now constituted two separate search committees, each tasked with identifying potential candidates within a two-month timeframe.
“We hope that this process will be completed within three months,” Prof. Nawangwe stated.
He made the remarks on Tuesday 4th March, 2025 via a press conference to update members of the Media on a host of various issues.
