Makerere University is buzzing with excitement as it warmly welcomes all first-year students to the campus. The university community is thrilled to introduce the freshers to their new home, offering a week of acclimatization known as “Orientation Week.”
Freshers are set to arrive on Saturday, August 3, 2024, one week ahead of continuing students. Orientation Week, running from August 3rd to August 9th, is a time-honored tradition designed to ease the transition into university life. During this week, new students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the campus, meet fellow students and staff, and explore key facilities.
Throughout the week, freshers will be introduced to essential university facilities, including the library, university hospital, and various recreational amenities. Meetings with key officers, wardens, and student leaders are scheduled to help new students feel at home and ready for the academic journey ahead. Registration, a major activity of the week, will also take place during this period.
Academic Year Schedule
Following Orientation Week, the academic year will unfold as follows:
- Semester One: Saturday, August 10, 2024, to Sunday, December 8, 2024 (17 weeks)
- Semester Two: Saturday, January 18, 2025, to Sunday, June 15, 2025 (17 weeks)
Changing Programmes and Subjects
For students considering a change in their academic programmes or subjects, the university has streamlined the process to be conducted online. From Monday, July 29, 2024, to Friday, August 9, 2024, students can apply for changes after paying an application fee of UGX 6,000 plus bank charges. It is important to note that unauthorized changes may result in discontinuation from the university. Approved changes will be communicated via official letters, and students must complete and return acceptance forms to the Undergraduate Admissions and Records Office, their former College/School, and the new College/School.
Important Fees and Requirements
Freshers should be aware of the following fees and requirements:
- National Council for Higher Education Fee (Per Year): UGX 20,000, payable to the National Council for Higher Education Account in Stanbic Bank.
