Ever since Makerere lecturers went on strike, the university council under the chairmanship of Eng Dr Charles Wana-Etyem has had a rough time with daily emergency meetings.
While in a meeting yesterday to effect the president’s directive of closing the university until further notice, all staff members were ordered to return University property by Monday next week.
The keys in particular are for different halls of residence, offices, faculties and all university vehicles.
Currently, the University is officially closed leaving only 3 functional offices that is for the Deputy Vice chancellor, the University Secretary and that of the University Bursar.
These offices were excluded from closure since they play an intermediary role between the university council, Muasa, students and the government.
On top of handing over the keys, there is also an audit to be conducted. During this audit, some university staff will be appear before the Public Accounts Committee and some of the burning issues to hit on rotate around the finances from the University Guest house and the Printery. All this will be in a bid to resolve the internal Muasa grievances where some staff allegedly stomach the lion’s share of the incentives.
