The office of the Principal at the School of Law in Makerere University has, in a written missive, dated 23rd January, 2018 suspended all evening classes for all undergraduates and Masters students.
In the letter addressed to all evening students on the LL.B (undergraduate/bachelors) and LL.M (masters) programmes and copied to the Vice Chancellor and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, the Principal Prof. Christopher Mbazira announced the suspension of the said classes with immediate effect.
According to the letter, the School Board sitting on the 9th of January reached the decision to suspend the said classes until the university management addresses the School of Law’s concerns regarding the services offered by the staff on that programme.
It is important to note that the lecturers’ work contract stipulates that their operations are from 8 a.m to 5 p.m.
It is therefore upto the university management to facilitate their time after 5 p.m.
This is not the first time they are suspending the said classes at the School of Law since there was a similar incident last year around the same time.
The lecturers demand unpaid incentives and also seek formal employment for the said classes.
Efforts to get a statement from the Principal were futile but the lecturers we contacted expressed mixed reactions on the matter.
“We know the effects of the decisions and we are completely hurt that it had to come to this stage but unless your administrators treat our matter and concerns with urgency, we cannot do anything to help you,” said one of them.
