In 2012, Makerere University restructured it’s status from a faculty based to a college model and since then all the former faculties are now operating as colleges except the Law School which has not yet achieved the college status and this instigated it not to be autonomous.
When the contract of the former law school Principal expired last year, the University council rejected the proposal of appointing a permanent principal of the school quoting that the title and the office was not in line with Management of Constituent Colleges of Makerere University since it was not approved by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) as one of the colleges in Makerere University.
Associate Professor Christopher Mbazira, the acting Principal of Law School said that in order for NCHE to approve their College, the school should be done with it’s internal process, which they finished earlier. He also informed the staff to prepare for NCHE visit in few days to come.
“We expect to be inspected by a committee from NCHE in three weeks’ time, the exact time and date will be communicated when I get more information’’ Prof Mbazira speaks in the email he sent to the staff.
The internal process of acquiring a college status by the law school was completed in May 2014 since then they have been waiting for NCHE’s approval.
