Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is in plans of constructing its new home within Makerere University near the Eastern gate within the next five years.
The School is currently operating within Mulago Hospital where it houses a population of more than 800 students which is increasing every year. Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of the 8 storied facility, Prof Rhoda Wanyenze the Dean of MakSPH said that the project is done to strengthen scientific research, teaching and also to meet the needs of growing population.
The facility will cost Shs 30 billion and currently Shs 6 billion has been collected from staff, well-wishers and project over heads. She said that they have started the work with the little amount they have as per now because they can’t wait anymore. The Netherlands ambassador to Uganda, Henk Jan Bakker publicized Dutch’s contribution of US$303,370 (Shs 1.061 billion) towards the construction of an auditorium that will be housed in the facility.
Makerere University will contribute Shs 1 billion from its 10 billion from the government meant for infrastructure development at the university.
Prof Wanyenze requested the public to support the construction of the facility because a lot of money is still needed and she also requested the various organizations that pledged to contribute towards the project to fulfill their pledges so that the work on the project so that construction work goes on smoothly.
