Makerere University has deepened its collaboration with Kiira Motors Corporation through the acquisition of three state-of-the-art buses aimed at improving campus transport and promoting inclusive mobility.
The handover, which took place on September 27, 2025, marked another milestone in Makerere’s ongoing efforts to support homegrown innovation and sustainable development. Of the three buses, two are diesel-powered, while the third is an electric bus dedicated to easing the movement of students and staff with special needs across the university.
According to university officials, the new buses demonstrate Makerere’s commitment to inclusivity, equity, and care for its community. “By ensuring that every student and staff member can fully participate in academic life, Makerere continues to create a learning environment where everyone can thrive,” the statement read.
The partnership between Makerere and Kiira Motors is rooted in shared values of innovation and national development. Kiira Motors itself traces its origins to research conducted at Makerere’s College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology (CEDAT), showing how academic ideas can evolve into practical industrial solutions.
University leadership expressed appreciation to the management and team at Kiira Motors for their ongoing collaboration and support. “Together, we are advancing sustainable transport, promoting green technology, and reaffirming our vision of a modern, inclusive, and innovation-driven Uganda,” the statement concluded.
The addition of these buses not only strengthens Makerere’s transport system but also stands as a proud symbol of Ugandan engineering excellence in action.
