In all the unfavourable conditions for a strike like the rain and flying cannisters of teargas, Makerere University have exhibited resilience and continued with their demonstrations. Converging at several meeting points including halls of residence and schools, students later march together with the main destination being the main building.
As a means of curtailing their commitment and organisation however, the police have finally arrested the guild president Salim Were a fourth year Veterinary Medicine student and whisked him away to an unknown destination.
He was picked from the School of Psychology near the main gate of the university.
In the scuffle that ensued from his arrest, about five other students were also bundled up by the Police and teargas distributed evenly amongst the rest of the student community.
Students however, now insist that they will not back down until their arrested comrades are released.
There is no official guild communique as regards the arrest and detention of their leader and the police is temporarily in-charge of the institution after cutting off several halls of residence with huge security presence all over the university.
