Santalucy Fungaro, a student at Makerere university is seeking your help. The second year student is battling dermatomyositis, an autoimmune skin condition that affects the skin, tissues and muscles and causes inflammation of the muscles which in turn get wasted. Fungaro has on various occasions reached out for medical help believing that the condition can and could be suppressed. It was through this continued belief that she reached out to the Myositis Center in USA and Canada for help but the costs were way over 250 million Uganda shillings.
With continued stigma attached to the condition, she continued reaching out to doctors in the myositis center up until she zeroed down to a rheumatologist in Muthaiga Nairobi at Gertrude Children’s Hospital. The estimated bill for the first phase of consultation was then billed at shs23m, an amount she can’t raise wholly by herself. The amount will also cater for transport and accommodation.
Fungaro’s mom lost her job while constantly taking care of her daughter whereas the father earns hand to mouth. The Makerere university student now seeks to raise the money using social media platforms as she, on 28th April 2020, starting a drive using the hashtag #powerof10k on Twitter.
With the help of known social media influencers under UOT (Ugandans On Twitter) fraternity presided over by AIGP Assan Kasingye, a select UOT team spearheaded by Ms. Birungi Esther(@EstherBirungi4), Mr. Wepukhulu Emmanuel(@wepcorp) and Mr. Asaph Muvunyi (@Urbanbouy01) began trending it and within a scope of 24hours they raised 4.5million.
The 19-year-old Fungaro believes she stands a chance of recovery when put on the right medication. She continues to wear her scars with pride because they are a mark & a badge that shows she defeated death as she seeks to your esteemed help.
