Makerere University 89th guild leaders have insisted that they will have this year’s freshers ball despite challenges encountered in its preparation.
The minister of social affairs Faith Tabusa, in a rare mode of event publicity, told students, in her letter dated November 14th, 2023, that the freshers ball is slated for Saturday November 18th, 2023.
In her letter, Tabusa tells students to prepare their dancing shoes and prepare for performances from their favourite artists and deejays.
“I am elated to inform the students’ fraternity of the upcoming highly anticipated annual freshers ball…our request is that you get your dancing boots ready as we are set to have live performances from your favourite artists and DJs,” the letter reads in part.
Tabusa further urges students to desist from violence and disruptive behaviour that could potentially harm other students and/or lead to damage of property.
“We, however, call upon your maximum cooperation and encourage you to refrain from violence and disruptive behaviour that could harm fellow students or damage property,”she said.
However, a section of Makerere University students have many doubts about the success of the freshers ball given failed attempts to have it in the near past.
The 89th guild has postponed this particular event twice with the last postponement made after the event flopped on October 13th, 2023. The institution’s guild president attributed the failure to sabotage by management.
Makerere University has not had a freshers ball since March 2022 when social events were suspended from the university. Even with the uplifting of the suspension, management has put up tough conditions that have made it almost impossible to have the freshers ball.
