Following the dialogue which the student leaders had with the University Management on 28th October, 2019 with the main objective of demanding the university administration to listen to their cries over the 15% tuition fees cumulative increment, Makerere University students have petitioned the speaker over the situation at the university.
The dialogue was meant to find solutions to the issue that has caused a strike which has since destabilized the normal working system at the university for a couple days. Much as the dialogue ended prematurely and didn’t yield any results, it is the discontentment from the student leaders that has compelled them to take greater steps.
The Guild Presidents’ association has backed the student leaders to petition the speaker of parliament demanding the reinstatement of suspended students among whom is Siperia Mollie who is still bed ridden.
They also want an inquiry on how the vice chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe is running the institution and the withdraw of the military from the university which has caused a lot of damages by raiding student’s halls of residence at night and destroying their property.
