Esther Nakitende, a third year Journalism and Communication student was stabbed in her room on Saturday 31st October 2015 in Kawempe, a Kampala suburb. Her body was found lifeless at the bathroom corridor on the next day at 1:00 pm.

Esther Nakitende was an orphan who was living at the uncle’s house and was given the responsibility to collect rent from tenants. It is alleged that the cousin, Buule Benson who was earlier banned from the house because of bad behavior such as theft, hit Esther with a metallic metal on the back of her head on her chest after struggling with the deceased as bruises were found on the her body.

Buule is said to have wanted the money that Esther had collected from the tenants; after Esther had disagreed to give in to Buule’s demands, he then decided to murder her. Each tenant is supposed to pay shs180,000 monthly and it is said that Esther at that time had only collected money from one tenant. It was at this point that Buule fought with Esther and collected the money leaving her with shs1,000 in her hand which she was found holding when lying lifeless. Buule is alleged to have locked the door and ran away after leaving his clothes soaked in blood behind.

Margaret Namakula, the aunt to Esther said that given the fact that Esther and Buule were alone in the house, it was Buule’s perfect opportunity. Buule had earlier on found the Aunt, Margaret at a bar nearby taking local brew “waragi’ and sponsored her which kept her long. On that fateful day, the Aunt came back and found the door wide open which left her shocked. She then went in calling Esther out but she was not answering her door, after repeated failed attempts to call Esther out as her bedroom door was locked, she decided to go and sleep.

Prossy Kamukama, a friend to the family confirmed that the body of the deceased had indications that Esther was trying to fight for her life but all in vain. “Esther’s face had been sliced twice, one cut around the mouth and the other around the eye,” Kamukama stated. On Sunday, 1st November 2015 at around 1:00pm, Margaret got so concerned and called the neighbors who broke the door and found the body. They later called the police and the body taken to Mulago Hospital.

A close relative to the family said that Buule Benson is also said to have been in love with Esther, his cousin, and therefore they would not be shocked if he raped her before murdering her. Close friend from Esther’s class say they had seen her on Friday, 30th of October, in her joyous moods and with no clue of the tragedy that was to befall their dear friend.

Esther Nakitende was a humble, caring, loving and a down to earth girl who will surely be missed.

May Her Soul Rest In Eternal Peace.
