Elizabeth Gabeya made history this week when she assumed leadership of Makerere University in a symbolic gesture celebrating International Women’s Day.

The 21-year-old first-year Mastercard Foundation Scholar, pursuing a Bachelor of Agricultural and Rural Innovation, temporarily stepped into the shoes of Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the institution’s Vice Chancellor.

“I have never thought that I would ever enter the Vice Chancellor’s office,” said Elizabeth Gabeya, beaming with excitement after an extraordinary two-day experience.

Nervously whispering Jesus’ name as she approached the imposing office in Makerere’s Main Building, Gabeya’s anxiety quickly dissolved when Professor Nawangwe greeted her with surprising warmth: “Welcome, Elizabeth; you are the Vice Chancellor.”

During her brief but impactful tenure, Gabeya chaired meetings with senior staff from Uganda Revenue Authority, received the 90th Guild President of Makerere University, and even led a top management meeting with delegates from Mauritius discussing venture capitalism opportunities.

“The Vice Chancellor’s words challenged me to dream bigger, work harder, and seek opportunities beyond the classroom,” Gabeya reflected on the experience that transformed her understanding of university leadership.

Professor Nawangwe described the role-playing exercise as “a strong catalyst, propelling many young women into leadership and positioning them as agents of change in their communities.”

He emphasized Makerere’s ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment through mentorship programs, scholarships, and leadership training.

For Gabeya, dressed simply in a white T-shirt and blue jeans for her unexpected leadership debut, the experience has ignited new ambitions: “I will never forget these two days in my life. As a student, I cannot afford to get retakes or be average. I am going to study hard and see that one day I occupy that office.”

As she handed back the leadership mantle, Gabeya’s parting words resonated with purpose: “This is not just an event, it is a milestone in my academic journey. It has reminded me that I am part of a bigger mission to lead, innovate and create a better future for my community.”
