The Kiryandongo accident that claimed so many lives to the extent of having national mourning declared for three days had very few survivors. The damage was so much and by mere looking at the wreckage, one would hardly believe that anyone could survive it.
Luckily however, the survivors were there and they included a third year Law student at Makerere, her aunt and two children that were travelling in the ill-fated bus together on that day of May 25th.
Laureen Odwe Amony is currently hospitalised and in a very helpless state after the accident. She had both of her arms broken and her aunt survived with a spinal injury but she is currently in comma.
Altogether, they require more than 80M in medical and recovery bills.
It from that background that her friends, classmates and the general law society of Makerere started the #SaveLaureen campaign as a means of being there for her in her greatest time of need and to try and raise money that could see her through.
On the 10th of June, they have organised a car wash to help raise funds for Laureen and her aunt’s medical bills and this will be at the Satellite washing bay in Kisaasi. One car will be washed at shs. 15,000 and two cars at shs. 20,000.
For all the other services that shall be availed that day like muchomo and juice, all proceeds shall go to the drive to save Laureen.
So far, just over shs. 4M has been collected from among her classmates.
When contacted, the Makerere Law Society vice president, Esther Linda Mugisha confirmed the fundraiser and called upon everyone in whatever capacity they are in to come through for this family.
“It is four survivors of that gruesome accident that we are talking about and I believe that God let them survive for a reason. We cannot just look on as they battle for life when we can help and that is precisely why we took up this campaign.”
We wish Laureen and her family a quick recovery from the injuries that befell them.
