A Makerere University student, Ms Paula Tusiime has emerged overall winner of the 15,000USD (about Shs.55M) Global Wege Prize 2020 that was held online due to COVID-19 effects with her project dubbed Hya BioPlastics that aims at recycling bio-degradable raw material
The competition saw students from around the globe teaming up to be part of this year’s Wege Prize to redesign and solve issues on how the world produces and consumes waste.
Second in place was Margaux Sellnau, an Environment and Sustainability Studies student at Grand Valley State University in USA who channeled her idea at transforming food from campus dining services into packaged meals made available to students in a project dubbed further food.
The two competition finalists also got a chance to talk to Lori Cook alias Maranda, a popular American TV personality and shared their experiences. The ladies also shared advice to other young students on how they can make a difference in their communities.

The Wege Prize is an annual competition that ignites game-changing solutions for the future by inspiring college and university students from around the world to collaborate and redesign the way economies work. Developed by Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) with the support of The Wege Foundation, Wege Prize is open to undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students worldwide.
