The first lady and Minister for Education, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni has warned Makerere University students against missing lectures while maintaining that there is no strike at the university and the lecturers are available but it’s the students that have stayed away from lecture rooms.
While addressing the press after the release of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results, the first lady said that as far as she knew, all lecturers are available to teach and they are being let down by students who don’t turn up for the said lectures.
“We can’t blame the university for that. We can’t blame the lecturers for that. We have to blame the students” the Minister said before adding that the students are not being denied education but are instead denying themselves education.
This however does not really reflect what is on ground since lecturers have maintained that they will not be stepping in class until the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) declares that all is normal and they can resume.
Some have even threatened to sue class representatives who call them asking if they’ll be teaching saying that it’s a violation of their Labour rights.
