Campus Bee has received images from the ongoing protests at Makerere University (MAK) that show the vandalism that has been done to the property of the former guild president Salim Papa Were who was in office for the year 2017/2018.
The former president is accused of being one of the people that spearheaded the passing of the 15% tuition increment that was approved by the university council in July last year.
His property including sofa sets, a flat screen, home theatre among other sets of furniture and paper were burnt in the protest outside Nsibirwa Hall of residence, where he has been sleeping. All has been set ablaze. His room has also been turned upside down, ransacked by the protesters, carpets spoiled with what looks like water, any wall fixtures damaged.
Last year Makerere University Students’ 7 member Guild Special Committee presented a report wherein they proposed that a uniform and moderate 15% tuition increment be made for new students across all programs effective Academic Year 2018/2019. The team was headed by Salim Papa Were.
The recommendations in the report, now being implemented by the university are the reasons the students, university, and the military have been engulfed in days protests causing an impasse at Uganda’s biggest highest institution of learning.
