Students at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) at Makerere University under the Materials Product Development and Nanotechnology (MAPRONANO) have invented a self-sanitizing facemask with an in built sanitizer which disinfects in real-time while the user is at work.
The sample was developed in a space of three days and there will be further improved before the product can officially be released to the market.
“The logistics challenge of protective gears compounded by lack of efficient masks requires the need for reusable masks; therefore this mask can assist the logisitics challenge of face masks since it is reusable and also minimizes the rate of health worker hospital-acquired infection as it allows for frequent sanitization,” said Mr. Brian Mujuni, the manager, MAPRONANO.
MAPRONANO is also working closely with the Makerere Univeristy College of Health Sciences to develop sanitisers. The sanitisers have already undergone the required tests at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards(UNBS). Apparently, over 1000 litres of the sanitisers are already on the Ugandan market.
