Makerere Students Fault Admin for Delayed Guild Elections, Threaten to Cause Havoc

The student body at Makerere University is not happy with the ‘games’ that the acting guild president Ezra Byakutangaza is trying to play in order to extend his stay in power. He has greatly delayed the electoral period for the guild president and has not yet sworn in an electoral committee, according to reports.

This has led to many questions on what is going on, why and also impatience. Normally around this time of the year the campaigns would be at their peak and the polls up for the expected winners. This hasn’t been the case this year as no one is certain about the election dates.

Electoral reforms have also been announced and they weren’t well received by the students. These reforms include; Removing campaigns from halls, barring students who have ever been on a dead year for any reason from standing, barring people who ever appeared in a Disciplinary Committee a chance to run.

The reforms, according to some students we talked to, eliminate many from the race and leave just a few that are favored by the university or handpicked by the leaders before them.

The question that remains is could this be a way of trying to eliminate some candidates from the race?
