Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports and First Lady of the Country has finally come out about the situation at Makerere University.
In a dossier that was shared all over her social media, the First Lady expressed her support for the tuition policy at Makerere citing that the right procedures were taken to ensure that a reasonable increment is reached.
“It is important to understand that Makerere University Management took the trouble to ensure that students were fully involved and consulted in the process of establishing an acceptable tuition fee structure for the Institution, through a series of consultations with the student leadership, and the outcomes were agreed upon by both parties, as well as bench marking with other similar universities.” Mrs Museveni said.
She added that she had received information that some elements in the opposition are using the students and paying them daily to cause anarchy. From her sources, she also said that the same opposition leaders go ahead to pay foreign media to cover the strikes and paint a bad picture about the country.
“Apparently, the political opposition in this country – who are well funded ‘somehow’ by some ‘unknown sources’ – find it useful to pay unemployed young people to riot wherever and whenever they believe they see a viable opportunity.” The First Lady added.
She however pinned the university management for failing to revisit the tuition policy when the students came out to oppose it. In her wisdom, she said the logical thing to do was to revisit the policy when a section of students claimed it was extortive and find a better means forward.
