A group of Makerere university students this morning held a mini protest at Buganda Road court ahead of the bail application hearing of their don, Dr Stella Nyanzi.

Dr Stella Nyanzi is appearing in Buganda Road Chief Magistrates court right now for her second bail application hearing. The hearing is conducted following a ruling by High Court Judge Elizabeth Kabanda on April 26 stating that the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s court had powers to hear the application under the Mental Treatment Act (MTA).

However, according to Nyanzi’s lawyers led by Isaac Ssemakadde, while the state is pressing for Nyanzi’s mental examination before the hearing of the case proceedings, they intend to petition the Constitutional Court over the Mental Treatment Act (MTA) because it breaches sections of the Constitution.
