Several students from Makerere University have come out to publicly reject a fundraising campaign that was recently launched in a bid to restore the destroyed Ivory Tower.
The Makerere top administration led by Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe (Vice Chancellor) recently called upon their alumni from all over the world to contribute towards the re-construction of the Ivory Tower.
The Makerere University Main Building/Ivory Tower was on 20th September burnt to ashes following a fire, whose source hasn’t been established.
Following the campaign’s launch, a poster calling for its boycott was circulated in various students’ groups including the official Makerere University Students’ Guild Facebook group. Information on the poster (allegedly from The Makerere Official Alumni Association – MOAA) called upon the alumni not to contribute a single coin until investigations are complete.
The “No Coin to Makerere Campaign” also calls for the disbandment of the university convocation, which is responsible for maintenance and other construction- related activities.
Surprisingly, majority of students who commented on the poster have agreed with the move of not contributing a single coin until investigations into the inferno are finalized.
Some students wonder where the university puts all the money it collects as tuition, while others have gone an extra mile of accusing the institution’s leadership of trying divert the country from facts in relation to the fire.
“I also thought of it long time investigations first so as we know the cause of the fire, are we stupid to just contribute do they think we harvest the money from a tree eeehhhh,” a one Naturinda Carol commented.
“We paid alot of tuition during my year of study at makerere and just doing test 1 you had to have paid 60% if not no test then at the end of your 3 years no graduation. Sooooo Where does all that money go after the expenses Build ivory tower and muleke re awo okutujoga. Am not contributing period!!! And who caused the fire anyway?” commented Mbatudde Joan.
“Organize a press conference we shall support your cause,” Moses Ssejjengo wrote.
