Magistrate at Buganda Road Court has remanded four Makerere University students to Luzira Prison until November 17, 2016, for protestig against the closure of the university.
The quartet was arrested on Monday during a botched city protest.
According to our source, the remanded students include Roland Ainebyona Edmond Kahiji and Paul Kato, while the 4th student’s name could not be readily ascertained. They are reportedly being charged with the offenses of inciting violence and holding an unlawful protest.
It is said that having failed to present substantial sureties during their Court hearing yesterday afternoon, the four students were denied bail and subsequently remanded to Luzira.
Unverified reports indicate that while Ainebyona denied the charges, his three colleagues admitted that they had committed the said offenses. The quartet had no lawyer in Court. It is similarly not clear whether any member of MAK Students’ 82nd Guild was present in Court, but Kato had already come out to state that he wants to be the next Guild President.
